Sanda House is built from local field stone and sandstone and is part of Tasmania’s history. Orford is a 1 hour drive from Hobart, via the Tasman Highway on the east coast, the warmest part of Tasmania. The town has a population of approx 500 and faces Maria Island, which can be reached by a 20 minute ferry ride. Maria Island (a former convict settlement) has an interesting
history and pre-dates Port Arthur. Its well Port Arthur can be reached from Orford, by the tourist drive through the Wielangta Forest, which begins a few doors up from Sanda House. Orford has most of the features of a small holiday town. A charming nine hole golf course, a bowls club, a hotel, fresh local seafood, a vineyard across the bridge, supermarkets and a post office. The Prosser River runs through the town and out onto a pristine beach. Shore birds are often the only thing you will encounter. Their nesting site are protected.
