Milhouse On The Bridge - Tasmania, Australia

Millhouse on the Bridge was built in 1853 on the banks of the meandering Coal River in southern Tasmania. It overlooks Richmond Bridge - built of sandstone by convicts in 1823, it is Australia’s oldest bridge.

Millhouse, built by George Burn, was originally a steam-driven flour mill. It was converted into a home in the 1920s by Australian landscape artist John Eldershaw. Millhouse on the Bridge has recently been superbly restored as a quality B&B with four guestrooms under the one roof. The antique beds of brass, mahogany and Huon pine, the totally private facilities, central heating, log fire in our beamed sitting room and delicious country breakfasts in our sunroom ensure a memorable stay.

Guests can wander in the gardens and orchard on our 2 hectare property, or relax under the historic silver poplars that fringe our side of the riverbank.

Over the road from Millhouse is St John’s, the oldest Catholic church in Australia. And just a short stroll across the famous bridge, and around a bend, is Richmond, the prettiest Georgian village in Australia.

Richmond Gaol is a ‘must visit’.

It is the oldest penal settlement standing in Australia, older even than Port Arthur. Some of Tasmania’s best craft shops are along the main street and cool climate wineries, specialising in pinots and chardonnays, are dotted along the valley.

Hobart is just 20 minutes away. Hobart Airport is even closer. Historic Port Arthur is one hour’s drive and
Richmond is also an ideal point of departure for Freycinet Peninsula and the East Coast, the Upper
Derwent Valley and the Midlands.

But you may not want to wander too far when you choose to stay at Millhouse on the Bridge.
