Millhouse On The Bridge

Millhouse on the Bridge, on the east bank of the Coal River, overlooks the historic six-arch Richmond Bridge.

Millhouse on the Bridge, with its massive rough-hewn eucalypt beams and convict-made bricks, was originally a steam flour mill - one of four mills in Richmond, which last century was the granary for Australia's first two colonies: Van Diemen's Land (later to become Tasmania) and New South Wales.

The property is classified by both the National Trust and the National Estate.

It is the only mill still standing in Richmond and its position adjacent to Australia's oldest bridge gives it unique appeal.

This appeal resulted in the Australian landscape painter John Eldershaw converting the mill into his own private residence and studio in the 1920's.

Millhouse on the Bridge has recently been superbly restored with four guestrooms under the one roof.

Three Millhouse bedrooms have spacious en suite bathrooms; the fourth has a private classic bathroom with antique claw bath and separate shower. The antique beds of mahogany and brass are queen-size and two are half-testers. Two bedrooms also have single beds.

Our huge living room, with its eucalypt beams, and our bright sunroom are filled with antiques. Both rooms have log fires, but as a concession to modern times, all rooms are centrally heated.

Our cooked breakfast, with eggs collected from local hens, is served in our sunroom. We also provide evening meals by prior arrangement and have a cellar of wonderful Tasmanian wines.

The long Sunroom/Breakfast Room has windows opening on to a cottage garden.
